Single Component & Catalytic Water Based Polyurethanes
- Approximately 250 g/l volatile organic chemicals.
- Each coat dries in about 2 hours.
- Coating build feels lighter on the wood. Color changes little over time.
- Less odor. Most odor is gone within 12 hours.
- Toughest coatings cost more but can deliver a comparable product to oil in a shorter time frame with less odor.
- Recommended for projects where household will be occupied during work.
- Catalyzed urethanes are 90% cured in 24 hours.
Oil Based Polyurethanes
- Approximately 500 g/l volatile organic chemicals.
- Each coat dries in 18-24 hours.
- Coating build feels thicker on the wood. Color darkens and yellows over time.
- Strong odor. Odor remains for days and sometimes weeks.
- Dollar for dollar a comparable coating to water for 30% less. Performs well in commercial areas and rentals.
- Not recommended for application in occupied housing.
- Coating cures in 30 days.
Acid Curing Finshes AKA Swedish Finish
- Approximately 560 g/l volatile organic compounds.
- Each coat dries in four to six hours.
- High humidity and low temperatures can extend dry times.
- All sources of ignition must be turn off in the home ie heaters, air conditioner's and pilot lights.
- High build and hard wearing.
- Contains large amounts of formaldehyde.
- Cures in approximately 7 days.
- All pets and people must be removed during the coating process. Not usable in occupied housing.
- Very high toxic initial odor. Typically dissipated in 24-48 hours with aggressive ventilation.
- Due to the health and fire risks to the applicator and the consumer Cottonwood Finishes chooses to use Bona Traffic where a high quality hard wearing coating is desired.
